The Serengeti

One of the most popular times to visit Tanzania, especially the Serengeti, is when the famous wildebeest migration takes place. The annual wildebeest migration usually crosses into the Serengeti between May or early June. It is then that millions of wildebeest cross over Tanzania searching for water and food as the season changes. This is a magical sight to behold and a major drawing point for travellers who visit the Serengeti during this period. Imagine being able to witness over 2 million wildebeest crossing the beauty of the Serengeti; nature is clearly unrivalled in this National Park in Tanzania!

This national park is also known for its amazing history which includes the Maasai; fierce warriors who lived beside and with these majestic animals in East Africa. The name ‘Serengeti’ is actually from the Maasai language, Maa; specifically, “Serengit” meaning “Endless Plains.

In addition to wildebeest, the Serengeti National Park holds many types of large antelopes, including zebra, impala, eland, klipspringer, dik dik, and several different kinds of buck. Also look out for lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, rhinos, elephants, hippos, hyenas, bat eared foxes, jackals, warthogs, porcupines, crocodiles, baboons, mongoose’s and different types of monkey. The Serengeti is also home to almost 500 different bird species, including; vultures, storks, flamingos, martial and fish eagles and ostriches.

The Serengeti National Park is a must for any Tanzania safari – the opportunity to see the wildebeest migration and the chance to spend time in the beauty of this national park surrounded by nature and animals is the perfect Tanzania safari option!
